Ghent University wants to further expand its research and valorization activities on the Ostend Campus within the framework of the BLUE ACCELERATOR project, whereby testing facilities are realized on/near/off–shore with the aim of creating a Living Lab, based in Ostend, where testing is possible under real sea conditions. In the BLUE ACCELERATOR project a unique maritime test platform (500 m outside the port) has been built to perform tests in the context of the development of Blue Energy projects (offshore wind energy, wave and tidal energy) and the broader Blue Economy. The Blue Accelerator project is funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), with co-financing by the Flemish government (Hermes Fund). The project is coordinated by the Provincial Development Agency (POM) West Flanders, with the project partners Ghent University, VLIZ, Vives, VITO and TUA West.
The maritime test platform has been developed by Nemos GmbH and is adopted by POM. More information is available on the project page http://www.pomwvl.be/blue-accelerator. The following measurements, investigations and tests will be possibly carried out on the platform (non-exhaustive list): wave energy conversion, corrosion and abrasion investigation, cable manipulations, research on resistive resistance, material research, meteorological measuring mast, research into underwater substrates, research into stratification, drone platform, ROV and kite technology, ... The test setups are carried out both in the context of research by knowledge institutions and commercial companies.
ABOUT GHENT UNIVERSITY
Ghent University (UGent) is one of the most important educational and research institutions in the Low Countries. More than 9,000 employees and 41,000 students live up to the "Dare to Think" motto every day. High-quality education, internationally valued research and a pluralistic social responsibility characterize UGent's mission. UGent is internationally recognized for its fundamental and applied research in marine and maritime sciences. In total, more than 400 UGent employees conduct marine or maritime research. Moreover, UGent - as the only knowledge institution in Flanders / Belgium - has a very large diversity of "Blue Growth" expertise that has been gathered since 2011 in the inter-faculty partnership Marine@UGent. One of the objectives of Marine@UGent is to develop the valorization potential of marine and maritime research with special attention to development on the UGent Campus Ostend, the Science Park, in collaboration with the incubator GreenBridge NV.
As part of the implementation of the BLUE ACCELERATOR project, there are two open full-time vacancies within UGent. The first vacancy concerns an innovation manager, the second vacancy concerns a technical-scientific consultant. Both functions must support the following project activities:
- the development and facilitation of new R&D projects linked to the test infrastructure, in collaboration with Flemish knowledge partners and companies;
- realizing an increased attraction for knowledge partners and companies from the EU and worldwide to also use the infrastructure;
- Identification, development, implementation and valorization of the R&D projects. UGent Campus Oostende (Science Park) is the work place for both functions, in GreenBridge.
A full-time contract for the full project duration (till 30/04/2021) is provided.

FIRST VACANCY: THE INNOVATION MANAGER
The innovation manager works closely with the project partners, other knowledge institutions and the companies. The most important task consists of facilitating R&D projects. Together with the support provided for in another project work package, the innovation manager ensures that companies are offered a full package of guidance for the use of the test infrastructure. For the further growth of the sector, it is crucial that all Flemish players active in this domain make maximum use of the possibilities offered by the test infrastructure. To this end, a project portfolio will be developed and refined of (academic) R&D projects for which the test infrastructure will be of significant added value. All knowledge institutions in Flanders will (be able to) participate in these projects. In addition, the existing company network will also be informed of the possibilities of the Living Lab. This will enable these players to become acquainted with the challenges and opportunities of the sector. In this way, new R&D projects will be created, carried out by the knowledge institution (s) involved and / or the companies, whether or not collaboratively and at market competitive prices - using the appropriate infrastructure. These projects should certainly not be limited to consortia with only Flemish partners, but are also open to interregional and EU partners and can thereby make use of all existing funding channels at regional and European level.
